‘We sometimes find it difficult to support our children with homework as we do not understand the way it is taught in school’.

This is a very common issue for parents as the methods for teaching key curriculum aspects such as maths calculations or reading strategies have changed significantly in recent years.

In response to this comment, and in order to support parents when helping children at home, we have scheduled two maths written calculations workshops this term. The first, to be held on 2nd February is aimed at Key Stage One parents and the second, to be held on 9th March, is aimed at Key Stage Two parents.

In addition to this we have decided to involve pupils in supporting parents at home. Each class teacher is creating a video this term in which the pupils are filming an aspect of our maths calculation strategies. We will be creating a ‘Parent’s Guide’ section on the website which you can visit as and when appropriate to learn more and support your children accordingly.

We are also creating some reading tutorial videos, offering ways to support your children more by engaging them in a range of texts. Finally, we will be creating links to phonic websites that will help you to support children in the early stages of reading.

We envisage this new parent section of the website to be available by the start of the academic year 2015/16. We will write to you with further information once this section has been created. In the meantime we hope to see lots of you at the upcoming maths calculation workshops.

A Maths workshop is being held on the following dates:

Monday 2nd February 6 – 7 p.m. KS1

Monday 9th March 6 – 7 p.m. KS2

We recommend that you come along to the workshop to learn how we teach your child to write and decipher calculations and also to answer any questions you may have.   Please complete the reply slip below indicating which workshop you are able to attend by Friday 23rd January 2015.

A welfare vacancy has arisen and offers the opportunity for someone to join our staff team. The hours of employment are 12.30 – 1.30 p.m. daily to commence Monday 2nd February at £7.85 per hour. If you are interested in this position please contact Mr Caunce by Friday 23rd January.

If you have any unwanted gardening/outdoor items e.g. seeds, bird feeders etc. then please can you drop them off at the school office, they will be most welcome

If you have any used, small, transparent water bottles at home please can you bring them into school for the Reception class by Wednesday 28th January. Many thanks!

Please can all parents ensure that they telephone the school office on the first day of absence and then on the third day of absence. This should be followed up by a letter upon the pupil’s return detailing the medical reason for absence.  This system is extremely important in ensuring accurate attendance records and safeguarding pupils.

It is the time of year when the nasty sickness & diarrhoea bug does the rounds.   To avoid the risk of it spreading in school please can you avoid sending your child into school until 48 hours after the last episode of sickness/diarrhoea. Thank you!

The Hothersall Lodge Parents’ Meeting has now been moved from 6.00 p.m. to 5.00 p.m. on Monday 2nd March. Many apologies!

The final payment of £85 is due by Friday 30th January for the Year 5 children who are going to Hothersall Lodge in March. Please make cheques payable to LCC.

Dinner money should be paid in advance. Dinner bags are sent home in your child’s bag every Thursday for payment on Friday.   For those paying weekly the amount is £11.50 per week, however if you prefer to pay for the term then please let Mrs Vost know and she will inform you of how much you owe to the end of this term. Thanks!

Congratulations to our football team who drew 1-1 last week against Coppull Primary in their football tournament.

Good Luck to Hi Fives in their tournament tomorrow.

Walking Bus

It is pleasing to see an increased number of pupils joining the Walking Bus since the beginning of this term. As Spring approaches it would be great to see even more join us. A member of staff will arrive at Spar at approximately 8.25 a.m. and leave promptly at 8.30 a.m. for school, with no stopping en route to pick up additional children. Please see Mr Caunce for more information.

We are still collecting Batteries and Clothing, Bedding etc. for the clothes bank at the rear of the school. Your support is really appreciated!

Please can we ask parents not to bring their children into school before the start of Breakfast Club at 7.45 a.m. We are not covered under our insurance policy and staff require time to set up and discuss any matters arising.

If you have any queries regarding Out of School Club please contact the school office on 01257 276688 or Miss Collison on 07548 944202.

Yours sincerely

G. Caunce – Headteacher.
