Welcome to Cedar Class. Year 1 is a very exciting and important year at Primrose Hill Primary School, marking a significant stepping stone from the Early Years Foundation Stage into Key Stage 1. It is a year in which children continue to build upon the strong foundations established in Reception while developing greater independence, confidence and resilience as learners.

In Cedar Class, children are encouraged to explore, question and discover through a broad, engaging and creative curriculum. Year 1 provides a carefully planned transition from the play-based approach of EYFS to more structured learning, ensuring children feel secure, supported and ready to embrace new challenges. Through exciting lessons and practical experiences, children continue to develop their reading, writing and mathematics skills while fostering a love of learning.

Learning in Year 1 is enriched through a range of exciting experiences that bring the curriculum to life. One of the highlights of the year is the popular "Bring Yer Wellies" visit to Hoghton. This truly unique experience provides children with the opportunity to learn in a natural setting through hands-on outdoor activities and exploration. The visit encourages children to engage with nature, develop their curiosity about the world around them and build confidence through outdoor learning experiences.

Cedar Class is taught by Mrs Hacking, who is dedicated to ensuring that every child feels happy, valued and successful. Through high expectations, encouragement and nurturing support, she helps children develop confidence in their abilities and a positive attitude towards learning.

Throughout the year, there is a strong focus on helping children become increasingly independent and responsible for their learning. Children are encouraged to develop positive learning behaviours, perseverance and resilience, all of which will support them throughout their time at Primrose Hill.

We strive to create a warm, nurturing and inclusive classroom environment where every child feels safe, supported and inspired to achieve their very best. Alongside academic development, we place great importance on helping children develop kindness, friendship, respect and confidence.

We believe that a strong partnership between school and home is key to helping children flourish, and we value the support and communication of parents and carers throughout the year.

We look forward to sharing a wonderful year of learning, discovery and achievement with all the children in Cedar Class as they continue their journey through Key Stage 1 and develop the skills, knowledge and confidence needed for future success.

A. PE will be on a Monday and Wednesday. Pupils should come to school wearing their PE kits on these days.

A. Cedar have a library slot on a Thursday so will need to have their library book in school on this day to change it

A. In Year 1 we would like children to read at least 3 times per week. Reading can be recorded in their yellow reading diary and needs to be signed by an adult. Please ensure your child has their reading book in school every day. 

Throughout the term, there will be ongoing Emile tasks set for spelling and phonics, and Doodle Maths activities set to reinforce Maths learning. 

We will send weekly updates for phonics which will be linked to our current phonics focus in class. There will be optional activities to complete. 

A. Forest School takes place on a Wednesday. Your child will need waterproofs and wellingtons. All Forest School kit stays in school for the children to change into. 

A.  The Class Bear is sent home each Friday with the child who has received the Super Pupil award in Celebration Assembly. You can upload photos of what your child has been doing with the bear to Showbie in the ‘Class Bear’ section. The bear should be returned to school by the following Wednesday.

A. We use Forest School Wellingtons, but your child will need a coat in school every day. As the weather starts to get wetter, you may also wish to send in waterproof trousers.
